Preparing Your Roof for Winter

Want to make sure your roof gets through this winter season? If you’re not sure you should contact us and we can take a look. Otherwise, here are 4 tips to help make sure your roof gets through the upcoming winter season.

Inspect for Pests

Wild animals are doing the same thing we are as the months get colder. They are searching for a nice warm place to weather the colder months. Your roof & more specifically your attic can be a comfortable place for all sorts of fauna to come in from the cold including racoons, squirrels and mice. These critters and the entry points they build can adversely affect your roofing structure. We recommend calling a professional exterminator to evict these unwanted tenants and then calling us to repair any damage done!

Branches & Trees

Snow can be a heavy load whether on your roof structure or on tree limbs. We recommend identifying any dead tree limbs that may hang over your house and be at risk of breaking under the weight of a good snow and ice storm. Then call a certified tree company to prune the limb so that you don’t have a costly repair in the dead of winter when many roofers close up for the season. Also look for branches that come into contact with your roof and may rub the roof deck under the weight of snow and make sure to prune those back as well. Rubbing branches can significantly reduce the lifespan of your roof!

Clear Leaf Debris

Once the leaves are down and before the first snowfall, make sure to clean the gutters so that spring runoff has a place to go come time. Also ensure your gutters are in good shape without damage that could be exasperated by the weight of snow and ice. We recommend working with a professional contractor experienced with gutter cleanings.

Inspect the Attic

Inspect your attic or have it inspected by a professional. Ensure that it is properly vented an insulated. This helps you save on heating costs and avoids damage from moisture damage. Contact us to get a roof inspection before the snow flies.

Bonus: Get a Head Start on Holiday Decorating

Hear us out on this one. November is the perfect time to get a head start on holiday decorating, especially if roof lighting is part of your holiday tradition. You can instal your lights on your roof while temperatures are still reasonable and there is no snow to contend with, you just don’t plug them in yet, or do, we don’t judge. Make sure you check out this article on how to hang holiday lights and decor safely without damaging your roofing system!
