Ask Bruno: Flat Roofs

What are some of the unique considerations when replacing flat roofs?

I want to make sure that the flat roof slopes toward the down spout so the water can run off the roof rather than pool in the centre. While it is okay to have some water left on the roof after a large rainfall, typically it should be gone after 48 hours. This also means when the snow and ice melt in the spring that you will not get ice-damming where the ice builds up on the roof preventing the snow from melting and water running off. The eavestroughs which the down spout is connected to should also be sloped downwards properly so the water is directed away from the house. The edges are sealed properly with a metal drip edge so the water is directed down the eavestrough and not down the side of the house.
